Transportation and Parking

Parking and Transportation for IGHR

There are several methods of transportation available for traveling to / from / within Athens, Georgia.

Parking on the University of Georgia (UGA) campus can be expensive and IGHR students are encouraged to take advantage of the variety of free to low-cost transportation costs both on campus and around Athens.

The University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education & Hotel (aka Georgia Center) has a dedicated parking deck. Parking is included in the UGA Hotel fare, one parking pass per room, per night (allowing in and out privileges to the deck next to the Georgia Center), but off-campus attendees will pay a maximum of $10.00 per day.

The University of Georgia (UGA) has its own dedicated bus service known as the UGA Campus Transit System. These buses are free and convenient to get around to the various libraries and repositories. They also stop at the famous Georgia Arch which is the transition landmark from “gown to town." Numerous Athens restaurants and shops are a short walk away.

UGA Campus Transit has a downloadable app to get real-time information on schedules, routes and the time of arrival of the closest bus to your stop. The summer schedule is not as robust as the rest of the school year but IGHR staff will provide more detailed parking and transportation information during orientation.

The Athens Transit System (city bus service) is also an inexpensive way to get around town and for those who are staying off campus but want to avoid parking deck fees. These buses run close to city hotels and have dedicated stops at the Georgia Center. Fares currently range from .85 to $1.75 depending on rider’s age and time of day. Transfers among Athens Transit System buses are free.

Athens Transit is also an easy way to get to the Athens-Clarke County Public Library and its Heritage Room. Parking at the public library is free so people may wish to take their own vehicles.

The Georgia Center also provides a free shuttle for guests staying at the hotel to any place within 3 miles of the facility. This radius covers all of campus and most of Athens proper. However, these shuttles are on a first come, first serve basis and may not be available for a return trip.

The below map illustrates the major locations that IGHR faculty and students will be interested in. These distances are walkable but take some time because the campus is quite hilly. In the heat of July, an air-conditioned bus may be preferable! Check the UGA app or click the UGA Bus button on this page for the most up-to-date campus bus routes and real-time bus locations.
