Course Eleven — Genetic Genealogy Tools & Techniques: Intermediate DNA for Genealogy

Description

This course is sequential building on the skills learned in the Beginning DNA course. We will focus on the tools available for DNA analysis. The emphasis is on correlation and reasoning. Topics include: confirmation of ancestral lines with genetic evidence, building of theoretical trees to enhance correlation, and accessing the power of Google and Facebook to learn about living matches. Tools discussed include: GEDmatch, DNAGedcom (Gworks, Kworks and the Client), DNA Painter and the unique tools available at each of the testing company websites. The course schedule includes many guided open labs to provide hands-on experience using the presented tools. Lectures include case studies.

Required textbooks, prerequisites, or other student information

Advanced Preparation:

  • Review Genetic Genealogy in Practice, work through the exercises and study the answers.
  • Autosomal DNA test at least one person with Ancestry, FTDNA and 23andMe.
  • Autosomal DNA test at least a second or third cousin with any company. Obtain that person's authorization to upload the results to GEDmatch.
  • Register for a GEDmatch account.
  • Register for a DNAGEDCOM account. Silver Subscription required to use the Client.
  • Install a spreadsheet program, either Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice.
  • Laptop computer and familiarity with operating system (not tablet nor chromebook)
  • Create a small notebook or spreadsheet with the logon information (kit numbers, passwords, usernames) for all of the kits you manage.
