Course Eight — Understanding Land Records

Description

This course is an introduction to the use of land records in genealogy. As the week progresses, advanced topics will be covered. Land division in the United States will be described for both the state-land states and the states in the public domain. Skills such as land platting will be included. Federal land topics include the General Land Office website, township plat maps, tract books, patents, and land entry papers. Special topics include the surveys and records of Ohio, private land claims, homesteads, Native American land records, and bounty lands. The availability of online land records and online land ownership maps will be covered. Land title records such as deeds and title searches will also be discussed.
